After the announcement made by the Independientes party, where the results of the citizen survey of the Centro Nacional de Consultoría for the selection of the candidate for the Mayor of Medellín were communicated to the public opinion, Juan Carlos Upegui obtained 26.2% to be the official candidate of the collectivity.

During the selection process, Juan Carlos Upegui participated in several forums, where he discussed, along with six other pre-candidates, the needs, challenges and concerns of Medellín. Little by little, debate after debate and poll after poll, Upegui advanced in the internal contest and this Tuesday consolidated the vote intention of those surveyed.

The Independientes candidate is 33 years old and was born in Medellín on May 10, 1989; He grew up in commune 5 Castilla, northwest of Medellín, and his political career began as co-founder of the Tomato party, 11 years ago. Likewise, together with Daniel Quintero, he created what is now the Independientes political party, where he was co-director.


Juan Carlos Upegui is also recognized for being an activist on peace issues, in fact, he created the Secretariat for Non-Violence, where he was also the secretary for two years, and as an official in the administration of Mayor Daniel Quintero, he contributed in the construction of the Medellín Future Development Plan and the Management of strategic projects of the city.



Upegui is a philosopher from the National University of Colombia with an emphasis in the Study of Natural Languages applied to technology and the Study of data, he also trained with Harvard-Bloomberg in City Leadership.


Among his proposals to work for Medellín, the new candidate for Mayor for Independents, has lines such as the environment, education and non-violence, as well as giving continuity to programs such as Matrícula Cero and Computadores Futuro.


In a recent interview with Noticias Telemedellín, Juan Carlos Upegui spoke of his tours of the neighborhoods of Medellín to publicize his aspiration to the district mayor's office and carry a message of construction and collective participation with citizens in the face of what will be the program politician of him Likewise, he highlighted the successes of the city such as the Software Valley that allowed Medellín to be a District of Science, Technology and Innovation and mobility works such as the 80 Metro.
